Scripture is our final authority of all rules and practice concerning the Christian faith. The reason that this is true is because Scripture is the plenary verbal inspired Word of God Himself. And, the fact that Scripture is thus, means that it is without error and contradictions. In fact, we are able to believe Scripture alone above and beyond all understanding that has been put forth by mankind; this includes empirical science, philosophy, logic, or nonsense. Anything and everything put forth by mankind can only ever be conjecture at its best.
Mankind is a created form; therefore, mankind is incapable of conceiving the eternal. The Christian mathematician Blaise Pascal famously said, that “The supreme function of reason is to show man that some things are beyond reason.” Yet, man, in his pride, denies that there is anything beyond his intellectual or physical grasp. Scripture affirms that this is not true, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”(Isaiah 55:8-9); and, history affirms that this is not true. The greatest minds within the heathen world that ever lived could be said to be the Greek philosophers of the Golden Age of Greece, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and many others. Yet, of all of these great minds not a single one of them were able to conceive the idea of God Almighty. They never even came close. Nor could they put into practice anything that they philosophized as being good and righteous; they essentially were never able to do away with what ails mankind.
Sin is what ails mankind, all the philosophers acknowledge this fact; yet not a one could remedy this disease from mankind, let alone themselves. They all failed utterly. Not just in ancient Greece, but throughout the centuries. read your history books, study your philosophers; “all vanity” says the preacher in Ecclesiastes. It’s no different today. Man has tried to fix man, and man fails every time. Man tries to build his way to God, mind and body, and what happens? Scripture tells us; God, Genesis chapter 11 has an example — God confounds the language of the people trying to build the tower of Babel and “scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth.”
And, God continues to confound mankind, especially concerning His Word. Heathen criticize Scripture, they say it’s not accurate; the science is wrong, the history is incomplete; what do we say? The Scripture is not a science book and it is not a history book; it’s so much bigger than all that — it is a revelation of what God has done about mankind and mans problem, which is sin.
It is all in the Scripture, from the fall of man and His promise to do something about it in Genesis 3:15 to the end of Scripture at Revelation 22:21, God has put forth the truth about man and what He has done, is doing and will ultimately complete.
These facts include, that man was created perfect, man fell into sin, and that man has no way to fix his sin, and, is utterly helpless when left to his own devices. Well, God in His infinite mercy, has not left man to his own devices; for, God’s honour is at stake concerning man. The devil corrupted mankind and creation, and, God has a plan to redeem His creation, man included. And, that plan is certain and sure; and, that plan is contained in His revealed word, which is Scripture alone.
What is this remedy put forth in Scripture? It is the gospel of God; and this is why I write this blog — “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”(Romans 1:16-17)
